How to Properly Light Your Print

Choose the Right Type of Light
LED lights are an ideal choice for illuminating artwork. They emit minimal heat, which protects the artwork, and many are available with UV-filtering options. They also offer consistent even lighting and consume less energy.

Warm White (2700K - 3000K)

  • Best for: Traditional, warm-toned artworks, portraits, and landscapes

  • Why: This colour temperature provides a cozy, yellowish light similar to incandescent lighting. It’s ideal for creating an intimate atmosphere that complements classic fine art prints, portraits, and landscapes with warmer tones. Warm light enhances reds, yellows, and oranges, bringing out the richness in these hues.

Neutral White (3500K - 4100K)

  • Best for: General fine art prints, mixed media, and vibrant colour photography

  • Why: Neutral white is versatile, offering a balance between warmth and coolness that’s suitable for a wide range of prints. It enhances true-to-life colour representation, allowing colours to appear accurate without introducing any warm or cool tint. This colour temperature works well for prints that incorporate a mix of warm and cool tones, helping each colour look vibrant.

Cool White (5000K - 6500K)

  • Best for: Modern artwork, metal prints, black and white photography, and high-contrast images

  • Why: Cool white LEDs have a bright, bluish tone that makes them ideal for modern, high-contrast artworks. They work particularly well for metal prints, as the cool light enhances the reflective qualities of metal, creating a sharper, more defined look. For black and white photography, cool light brings out the contrast and detail, making it ideal for highlighting textures and intricate details.

Daylight White (5000K)

  • Best for: True-to-life colour matching, gallery settings, and photography displays

  • Why: Daylight LEDs mimic natural sunlight, making them excellent for prints where accurate colour representation is key. This light allows the viewer to see the artwork as closely as possible to how it would appear in natural daylight, making it perfect for photography and realistic fine art prints. This is also a standard colour temperature in galleries for consistent, true-to-life colour viewing.

Use Directional Lighting
Position lighting fixtures at a 30-degree angle from the artwork. This angle reduces glare, especially on reflective surfaces, and evenly distributes light across the piece. For larger works, consider multiple lights angled appropriately to cover the entire surface.

Adjust for Different Materials

  1. Fine Art Prints: Ensure even lighting across the entire print, and avoid placing lights too close to prevent heat or UV damage.

  2. Canvas Prints: Aim for soft, diffused light to avoid casting shadows from the texture of the canvas.

  3. Metal Prints: Experiment with different angles to highlight the unique reflective qualities of metal; using anti-glare lights can help control reflections.

Control Ambient Light
Ambient light, especially sunlight, can compete with or interfere with artificial lighting and create unwanted reflections. Display artwork in locations where natural light can be controlled, or use window treatments to minimize UV exposure.

Consider Adjustable/Dimmable LEDs: Dimmable LEDs allow you to adjust brightness for different viewing experiences and ambient lighting conditions.

  1. Use High-CRI LEDs: Choose LEDs with a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) (90+), as these provide better colour accuracy, ensuring that the artwork’s colours appear as intended.

  2. Test in Small Increments: Before finalizing lighting for a large installation, test different colour temperatures on a single print to see how the artwork responds.

Conclusion

Proper lighting is an essential element of art display that elevates the viewer's experience and preserves the artwork’s integrity. By choosing appropriate lighting and carefully positioning it, collectors and art lovers can ensure their pieces are presented beautifully and protected for years to come.
